A visitor blowing into a microphone in front of a night sea projected onto the floor

RIPPLESCAPE

What if a single breathcould light up a city?

Blow, and ripples spread across the sea. When they reach the shore, the city lights up.

About

About the work

01

Concept

Wave power generation turns the energy carried by waves into electricity, and Chubu Electric Power continues to research it. RIPPLESCAPE takes this technology as its theme: an interactive installation where your own breath traces the chain of energy from breath to wave, wave to electricity, and electricity to city lights.

02

How it works

The night sea and coastline near the Port of Nagoya are projected onto the floor. When the microphone picks up a visitor’s breath, ripples form on the water and spread toward the shore. As the ripples reach the shore, the lights of the coastal city come on.

03

Future

RIPPLESCAPE is the second work in Ki Sci Iki, a project that opens up research through art, and was exhibited inside a research facility that the public rarely gets to visit. The project aims to bring the knowledge of research institutions into the city as art, giving people an entry point to research in their everyday lives.
